Your Essential Maternity Checklist: Preparing Your Hospital Bag for Labor

As you approach the final stretch of your pregnancy, it's time to focus on your maternity checklist, ensuring you're fully prepared for your hospital stay. Packing your hospital bag is a pivotal part of this process, especially as you enter your third trimester. This guide is tailored to help you pack efficiently, so that you feel a lot less stress during the big day.

Essential Documents
Top of your maternity checklist should be all essential documents. This includes your ID, insurance information, and any hospital paperwork. A printed copy of your birth plan is also crucial to communicate your preferences effectively. Remember to have all important phones numbers within reach.

Comfortable Clothing
When considering how many days to pack for in your hospital bag, a general rule is to prepare for a stay of 2-3 days. This means packing comfortable clothing, including a gown or nightie for labor, a robe, socks, slippers, nursing bras, and a going-home outfit.

Toiletries
Your maternity checklist isn't complete without personal toiletries. Pack essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, shampoo, and deodorant, along with items for comfort like lip balm and a hair tie. Take makeup if you are up to it.

For Your Comfort
Comfort items are a must on your maternity checklist. Think about including a pillow, blanked, a portable speaker. These small comforts can make a big difference in your hospital stay.

Snacks and Hydration
Include light snacks and a reusable water bottle. Keeping your energy up and staying hydrated are key during labor.

For the Delivery Room
Consider adding a few additional items to enhance your labor experience and to better manage labor pain without an epidural. A TENS machine can help manage contraction pain, perineal massage oil can potentially aid in a smoother delivery process, affirmation cards can be a source of strength and encouragement, helping you stay positive and focused. Finally, bring a playlist of your favorite soothing music.

Post-Delivery Care
Postpartum care include maternity pads. While hospitals usually provide some, make sure you bring your own for the extra peace of mind. Additional items include nipple cream, perineal cold packs, a peri bottle or peri wash bottle, disposable underwear, and Witch Hazel foam that can help relieve postpartum pain. Witch Hazel can help sooth the perineum after a vaginal birth, especially if you have stitches and tears.

Baby Essentials
Your little one's first outfit and a blanket for the journey home are essential. Ensure these baby necessities are part of your maternity checklist. Items to consider are wet wipes and diapers, baby hats, pacifiers, baby outfits, and a car seat to the take your toddler home.

Tech and Entertainment
Remember to pack a phone charger and perhaps a tablet or e-reader. You may deciding bring some magazine to skim through. You do not know how long your labor will last so these items can be important to make your stay more pleasant.

Perineal Massage Bundle: Perimom Perineal Massage Tool+ Perineal Massage Oil
Ivy S. (Oberwil, CH)
Easy and simple

I am very happy with it, i think is much easier to do it with the device than with the Hands because you Cover a bigger area, no need to worry about your nails hurtig you, and feel more confident about doing it correctelly.
I also ordered the Sweet almond oil, what i really prefered the smell and consistência over the one I was using before from Welleda.
I can just recommend it, make live much easier with a big belly on the way of things. ☺️

Complete Kit From Perineal Prep to Recovery: Perineal Massage Tool + Perineal Massage Oil + Peri Bottle +4 Single Use Ice Packs + 2 Reusable Hot & Cold Gel Packs +4 Disposable Underwear (13pc. kit)
Linda (Richmond, CA)
Excellent

Very pleased with my purchase. My favorite items were the massager/oil, the underwear, the reuseable cool packs, and the peri bottle.

The massager let me do perineal massage independently, which was important to me. The tool was high quality and easy to use. I used it every 2-3 days from 36 weeks until my natural birth at 39+4. It was uncomfortable for the first two weeks, but then got better: I believe this is expected of perineal massage in general no matter how you do it. Although I did end up with some minor first degree tearing, I'm confident I did everything in my power to avoid it. (Plus, the tearing only occurred in the upper and side portions of my vag and labia... not the perineum proper... so I feel my massages did their job!)

The hospital did end up giving me versions of the underwear, bottle, and some disposable ice packs, but I loved having perimom's higher quality versions of these at home. The underwear were amazingly comfortable: stretchy (my regular underwear size is S/M), well-made, not at all itchy. I ended up wearing nothing but these underwear and a bra around the house for basically the first two weeks postpartum... they were just that comfortable!!!! The bottle was well designed, a pretty color, and allowed me to reach every region down there (compared to the free hospital squeeze bottle which did not have the little extendy stick). The reusable pads and their thoughtfully designed covers were also winners because they were flexible, unlike the straight-up ice packs given at the hospital which hurt to sit on.
Overall, this kit was amazing value for the price. It gave me everything I needed to feel prepared for postpartum recovery (with the exception of a witch hazel healing foam, which I bought elsewhere), at a fraction of the price of competitors. Every item was well made and high quality. Strongly recommend purchasing this kit!
